The GSWG represents the interests of the field "Social and Economic History" in public and towards educational policy makers.

The highlight of the GSWG's activities is the conference held every two years in spring, at which the Friedrich-Lütge Prize for the best dissertation in social and economic history is awarded.
    

The GSWG also promotes the long-term archiving of economic and social history research data in the Emporion repository and the efforts of Women in Economic History to increase the proportion of female academics in the field.
